Damn. If only that political story had waited a couple of days - or, if only I had finished this a day earlier. *facepalm*

Anyway, I finally finished the novel by Terry Pratchett, The Color of Magic. I had started to read it at least three times before, but it never "felt" right. This may sound weird, but I read novels sometimes based upon feeling. If a novel doesn't feel right at that particular time - and it could be the best damned novel ever written, and I'd still do this - then I just put it back into the "To Read" stack and find something does feel right.

This time, it did, and I'm glad. The story was fantastic! It was good enough that it has convinced me to add Book 2, The Light Fantastic to my Amazon Cart. Can't buy the thing this month, but February I might be able to. Woot!

This story takes place on a "Disc World" which rests on the backs of giant elephants standing the back of an even larger turtle. I know, odd, right? The sun of these worlds is very tiny and orbits around all: turtle, elephants, and the Disc World.

And to top it all off, it's full of magic.(who woulda thunk it, eh?)

The story revolves around a crappy wizard by the name of Rincewind, and a tourist from a foreign land called, Twoflower. Twoflower has a travelling companion. I use companion because the luggage Twoflower has with him, has a mind of it's own and is very loyal to its owner. And together, they cause all sorts of havoc as they travel the Disc World.

Twoflower's innocence keeps getting Rincewind - who would rather be somewhere else and out of danger - into all kinds of trouble. So much so, that Death - yep, he's a character in the books too - is anticipating the death of Rincewind and seems to hover around him a lot, waiting for a slip up.

Over-all, a fantastic novel, and one I'd highly recommend for anyone.

Until next time...

-Wil

Sci-Fi Wire is reporting that actor Patrick Stewart - of Star Trek: The Next Generation and X-Men fame - may well be Knighted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on New Year's Eve. That is so damned cool! (Btw, Christmas Message is at the bottom of this blog post.)

I've been a huge fan of Patrick Stewart's since I watched the 1980's movie, Dune and then on Star Trek: The Next Generation. The latter is where I truly saw him in action for a lengthy period and saw the range and talent he had.

His version of The Christmas Carol was a hoot to watch, and is one of my favorites. I try to watch it every Christmas, but, sometimes it isn't on. Maybe Netflix will have it available to watch on it's Instant Play. Then I can watch it on my PC with the ol' headphones on while folks are in the other room doing their talkin'. *snicker* Not that I'm a 'Scrooge', or anything. *whistles innocently*

All joking aside - I know, it's so difficult for me to do =P - he is definitely one of my top actors. Coming only after John Wayne, Charlten Heston, Clint Eastwood, Gary Cooper, and Cary Grant. Can you tell I watch really old movies? lol... *facepalm* Not that I don't watch a crap load of new stuff though. There are many actors and actresses I enjoy watching nowadays, but my memory sucks when it comes to names and it takes years for me to finally go, "hey! I know that actor's name!"

Anywho, here's the article:

Patrick Stewart—Star Trek's Capt. Jean-Luc Picard and X-Men's Charles Xavier—will be knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, according to a report in the British newspaper the Mirror.

In
addition to appearing in films, Stewart has been spending much of the
last decade performing on the British stage. He is to be knighted by
the queen on this year's New Year's Honours list. (The news isn't
official yet; the newspaper bases its report on anonymous sources.)

Palace sources said the Queen is a huge fan of the 69-year-old, who played Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

If he is knighted, Stewart will join fellow X-Men star Ian McKellen

Thought some of you may also be a fan, and might think this was cool as well.

On a more seasonal note, I want to thank those of you who actually read my blog. I truly do appreciate the fact that you find the stuff I post interesting enough, that you are willing to come here to read and participate. And I thank you.

I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas - or, if you are of a different faith, whatever the equivalent is to you - and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. May your Christmas be white, and your beverage warm.

May your God(s) - and Goddesses - be with you this season. And if you don't have a god, then may you be plentiful with family, and gifts. But most importantly, love.

Merry Christmas. Until next time...

-Wil

Was combing through an e-mail conference I frequent and found something interesting. In one of the e-mails an article was posted from the Times Online - a paper from the United Kingdom.

In that article is stated that scientists in Great Britain were reading through logs of ship Captain's from the 1600's to about the 1750's. In it, it states as a reminder that a small ice-age - also known as The Little Ice-Age - occured between about 1600 to about 1850. Among the logs reviewed were those of Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson - which is to your left - and Captain James Cook, one of the most famous explorers of that age - I will post a pic of his portrait below. To see their ships, HMS Victory, commanded by Admiral Nelson at Trafalgar - and Captain Cook's first ship - HMS Resolution. You can view them in my photo section to the right of the main page. Here is the first article:

Records kept by Nelson and Cook are shedding light on climate change by Jonathan Leake

Britain's great seafaring tradition is to provide a unique insight into modern
climate change, thanks to thousands of Royal Navy logbooks that have
survived from the 17th century onwards.

The logbooks kept by every naval ship, ranging from Nelson’s Victory and
Cook’s Endeavour down to the humblest frigate, are emerging as one of the
world’s best sources for long-term weather data. The discovery has
been made by a group of British academics and Met Office scientists who are
seeking new ways to plot historic changes in climate.

“This is a treasure trove,” said Dr Sam Willis, a maritime historian and
author who is affiliated with Exeter University’s Centre for Maritime
Historical Studies.

“Ships’ officers recorded air pressure, wind strength, air and sea temperature
and other weather conditions. From those records scientists can build a
detailed picture of past weather and climate.”

A preliminary study of 6,000 logbooks has produced results that raise
questions about climate change theories. One paper, published by Dr Dennis
Wheeler, a Sunderland University geographer, in the journal The Holocene,
details a surge in the frequency of summer storms over Britain in the 1680s
and 1690s.

Many scientists believe storms are a consequence of global warming, but these
were the coldest decades of the so-called Little Ice Age that hit Europe
from about 1600 to 1850.

Wheeler and his colleagues have since won European Union funding to extend
this research to 1750. This shows that during the 1730s, Europe underwent a
period of rapid warming similar to that recorded recently – and which must
have had natural origins.

Hints of such changes are already known from British records, but Wheeler has
found they affected much of the north Atlantic too, and he has traced some
of the underlying weather systems that caused it. His research will be
published in the journal Climatic Change.

The ships’ logs have also shed light on extreme weather events such as
hurricanes. It is commonly believed that hurricanes form in the eastern
Atlantic and track westwards, so scientists were shocked in 2005 when
Hurricane Vince instead moved northeast to hit southern Spain and Portugal.

Many interpreted this as a consequence of climate change; but Wheeler, along
with colleagues at the University of Madrid, used old ships’ logs to show
that this had also happened in 1842, when a hurricane followed the same
trajectory into Andalusia.

The potential of Royal Navy ships’ logs to offer new insights into historic
climate change was spotted by Wheeler after he began researching weather
conditions during famous naval battles. Later, as global warming moved up
the scientific agenda, he and others realised that the same data could shed
light on historic climate change.

He said: “British archives contain more than 100,000 Royal Navy logbooks from
around 1670 to 1850 alone. They are a stunning resource.”

Most of these earlier documents contain verbal descriptions of weather rather
than numerical data, because ships lacked the instruments to take numerical
readings. However, Wheeler and his colleagues found early Royal Navy
officers recorded weather in consistent language.

“It means we can deduce numerical values for wind strength and direction,
temperature and rainfall,” he said. The information will ultimately
contribute to the International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmos-phere Data Set, a
global database maintained by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration, a US government agency.

Wheeler makes clear he has no doubts about modern human-induced climate
change. He said: “Global warming is a reality, but what our data shows is
that climate science is complex and that it is wrong to take particular
events and link them to CO2 emissions. These records will give us a much
clearer picture of what is really happening.”

The Met Office has also set up a project, part-funded by Defra, the
environment ministry, to study 900 logbooks kept by the East India Company
on voyages between Europe and the Far East between 1780 and 1840. Its
vessels carried thermometers and barometers so the data is of higher quality.

Faced with logs taken over so many voyages, the researchers have had to be
selective. One of the most avid recorders of such data was Nelson himself,
whose personal logbook records the air pressure and other readings he took
up to several times daily.

Explorers with a weather eye

Britain’s explorers left vital records of weather around the world

— Robert FitzRoy was captain of HMS Beagle on two expeditions in the 1820s and
1830s. Charles Darwin was his passenger

— Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson’s voyages took him to the Arctic, the East
and West Indies and the Mediterranean before his death at Trafalgar in 1805

— Captain James Cook mapped much of Canada and the Pacific in the 1760s
and 1770s.

Hmm... Interesting information, no? Could it be that this has all happened before, and will happen again - even without blaming Humanity for the end of the world? Sorry for the Battlestar Galactica reference, but it sure seems to fit, doesn't it?

With the revelation that previous "evidence" may not be entirely accurate, this should come in quite handy in gathering the data once more. This time, preferably, without an organization who is for one point of view over another. It seems to me that one good thing has come out of the leaked e-mails regarding "global warming". It will allow us all to look at the supposed "hard science" regarding "global warming" - er, sorry, that's "climate change" now. Convenient how they slipped a name change in there, eh?

Anywho, I look forward to the coming years - and with any luck, decades - of new research on the matter. Maybe we'll finally begin to hear the truth about all this "climate change" mumbo-jumbo.

As always, I look forward to your comments. Until next time...

-Wil

I am now on the final novel in the Lost Regiment series, Down to the Sea. I've spent the last two months reading the nine novels of this series, and I've found I have fallen in love with them all over again.

In the first eight novels the story evolves around a fictional Civil War regiment, the 35th Maine Volunteer Infantry. We find them in the first novel boarding a troop transport, the Ogunquit, and setting out to sea to conduct an amphibious landing near a Confederatet fort - sorry, can't remember the name.

However, while enroute, they encounter a massive storm and the transport starts to founder. Most aboard think they are dead as they sea an extremely large wave heading towards them. The captain orders the ship to turn it's bow towards the wave in hopes of riding through it, but a light appears before the wave - growing larger by the second. It swallows the Ogunquit before the wave hits and they find themselves falling through a tunnel of light.

When they wake up, they are on a new world, Valennia, where they meet the Rus - descendents of ancient Russions. They make friends with them - although there is trouble with some factions within the Rus. Eventually, they learn of a race of non-humans called the Tugars. A race of beings that consider Humans to be cattle and feed upon them. When Colonel Keane - the commander of the 35th - found out, he was furious and disgusted that the Humans of this world could allow themselves to be lowered to such circumstances.

Many of the peasants see how the Yankees - the men of the 35th - are and wish to be like them and fight the Tugars. On the night Colonel Keane had ordered the vote to decide whether or not they would stay in Rus and fight, or leave until after the Tugars had moved on, the peasants revolt against the nobles. The fighting becomes desperate and Colonel Keane can't stand by and watch as innocent peasants are slaughtered by the nobles. So he ordered his regiment to fall in and said he was going to Sudzal - the capitol city of Rus - and help the peasants and if any of them wanted to come, it was their choice. But if they came, the entire regiment stayed for the duration.

Everyone volunteered to go to the aid of the peasants.

Fast forward to the eigth novel. Hans Schuder - the Sergent Major of the 35th Maine - is back from the dead, and the Republic - combining the States' of Rus and Roum - had decimated two seperate Hordes - the Tugars and the Merki - and now they are on the third, the Bantag. The new horde is more advanced than the previous two, and has created tanks - which they call land ironclads. Something the Republic didn't have in the beginning. The Republic eventually build their own tanks and the battle ensues. Eventually, Hans Schuder and Vincent Hawthorne come up with a plan they believe will end the war once and for all. A deep penetration rade into the rear supply lines of the Bantag Horde, and a plan to free the slaves there and arm them to fight. Thousands will die, but they will cause enough destruction to force the Bantag to capitulate.

Fast forward again, this time about twenty-five years for the Republic. They have had twenty-five years of peace, and Colonel Keane, is now the duly elected President of the Republic. Things are going well, but small problems are occuring which have President Keane's old war sense tingling. He sends out a ship to scout the seas to the south for information on the souther Horde, the Kazan. The ship - an armored cruiser - doesn't last a minute in a fire fight with one of the Kazan's smallest ships - a frigate. There were only two survivors, both aboard the scout plane the cruiser had launched a couple of hours before.

Will they make it home to the Republic? Will there be war? Well, I guess you'll have to buy the book(s) and find out, won't ya? =P

Over-all, I give this series a 7-out-of-10. It's a very fun read.

Fox News posted an article back in November of this year regarding an elderly gentleman's fight with his Home Owners Association. His name is Colonel Barfoot, recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, and a veteran of World War Two, Korea, and Vietnam. Here is the citation written for his Congressional Medal of Honor:

Second Lieutenant Barfoot's official Medal of Honor citation reads:

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at
the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty on 23 May 1944, near
Carano, Italy. With his platoon heavily engaged during an assault
against forces well entrenched on commanding ground, 2d Lt. Barfoot
(then Tech. Sgt.) moved off alone upon the enemy left flank. He crawled
to the proximity of 1 machinegun nest and made a direct hit on it with
a hand grenade, killing 2 and wounding 3 Germans. He continued along the German defense line to another machinegun emplacement, and with his tommygunMark VI tanks. of the leading tank, effectively disabling it, while the other 2
changed direction toward the flank. As the crew of the disabled tank
dismounted, Sgt. Barfoot killed 3 of them with his tommygun. He
continued onward into enemy terrain and destroyed a recently abandoned
German fieldpiece with a demolition charge placed in the breech.
While returning to his platoon position, Sgt. Barfoot, though greatly
fatigued by his Herculean efforts, assisted 2 of his seriously wounded
men 1,700 yards to a position of safety. Sgt. Barfoot's extraordinary
heroism, demonstration of magnificent valor, and aggressive
determination in the face of pointblank fire are a perpetual
inspiration to his fellow soldiers.

killed 2 and captured 3 soldiers. Members of another enemy machinegun
crew then abandoned their position and gave themselves up to Sgt.
Barfoot. Leaving the prisoners for his support squad to pick up, he
proceeded to mop up positions in the immediate area, capturing more
prisoners and bringing his total count to 17. Later that day, after he
had reorganized his men and consolidated the newly captured ground, the
enemy launched a fierce armored counterattack directly at his platoon
positions. Securing a bazooka, Sgt. Barfoot took up an exposed position

A Medal of Honor winner in a dispute over his right to fly the
American flag in his yard will have another week before D-Day -- when
he'll be forced to take down the Stars and Stripes or face legal action.

Ninety-year-old Col. Van T. Barfoot, a veteran of three wars,
initially was given a 5 p.m. Friday deadline to dismantle his flagpole
or face a legal battle over violating an order from his townhouse
community association in Henrico County, Va.

John K. Honey, who is part of Barfoot's pro-bono legal team, said
the homeowner association's board told him Thursday that it would push
the date back a week to Friday, Dec. 11, the Richmond Times-Dispatch
reported.

"There's not going to be an announcement anytime this weekend," Honey told the paper. "We can all get some breathing room."

SLIDESHOW: Medal of Honor Winner Col. Van Barfoot

Barfoot, who fought in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam, was
told in July that he could not put up his freestanding flagpole in his
Sussex Square neighborhood — but he installed it anyway.

On Tuesday, he says, he got a letter from the homeowners'
association telling him the 21-foot pole he erected in September
violates the community's aesthetic guidelines.

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., has gotten involved in the dispute in the hopes of coming to a settlement.

"We intend to get to work right away to try to come up with a
solution that’s acceptable to both Col. Barfoot and to the Homeowner’s
Association," Warner's office said on his blog.

The American Legion also has joined Barfoot's fight.

"The association underestimated the fight left in this elderly
veteran, and now they have to contend with the determination and
persistence of Col. Barfoot's 2.5 million friends in The American
Legion," National Commander Clarence E. Hill said in a statement.

But the homeowners' association defended their position, saying the issue wasn't Barfoot's right to fly the flag.

"This is not about the American flag. This is about a flagpole," the
association said in a statement, insisting that Barfoot directly
violated its board's July ruling.

"Col. Barfoot is free to display the American flag in conformity
with the neighborhood rules and restrictions. We are hopeful that Col.
Barfoot will comply."

Barfoot told the Times-Dispatch that he's faithfully displayed Old Glory every day since he served in the Army.

"There's never been a day in my life or a place I've lived in my life that you couldn't fly the American flag," he said.

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) – When Col. Van T. Barfoot raises the American flag, it's a special moment, in a life that's full of them.

“Just, one of the most beautiful things we've got on our side. It really is,” said Col. Barfoot.

In 1944, as a 25-year-old, he received the military's highest award:
the Medal of Honor, for an act of heroism in World War Two. That makes
him now, at age 90, a living legend.

To put that in perspective, when Col. Barfoot attends a Veterans Day
service, he's the only one to receive a standing ovation. So when he
was told that flying his American flag this way could lead to a fine of
up to $10 a day, it was all so confusing.

“To tell me that I can't fly that now, after 90 years is a little
bit, more than I can really just sit back and take it,” he said.

Colonel Barfoot and the homeowner's board where he lives are at
odds. The by-laws don't permit flagpoles...most neighbors just attach
flags to the front of their houses. But the colonel doesn't believe in
flying the flag any other way. His daughter wrote the board, hoping for
a one-time exception.

“I presented the one and only exception that I thought would never
ever happen again, and that was having a Medal of Honor recipient
living in this community,” said Margaret Nichols, Col. Barfoot’s
daughter.

The request was politely denied. The colonel raised his flag anyway.

“That's my dad. Ha-ha. He's never run from a fight in the past and he’s not gonna run from this one,” said Margaret.

He says it will "stay" that way, for as long as he lives in the house.

“I feel that I’ve earned the right to have it fly...regardless of what they say,” said Col. Barfoot.

The board has thanked Col. Barfoot for his bravery and service to
the country, but maintains that the flagpole is against a longstanding
neighborhood policy. If the fines actually do come down, several other
people have offered to pay them.

This brave man has served his country with honor, going above and beyond the call of duty to take the fight to the enemy, and to save those under his command. If he wishes to have a flagpole and fly the American flag each day, then by god let him do so. He has earned that right.

I am proud of this man who once stood up to Nazi Germany, North Korea, and the Viet Cong and basically told them to go do something with themselves. I've never been a fan of HOA's, they seem like little dictatorships to me, and therefore, I am hoping this brave soldier - and those standing with him - will kick this particular HOA's ass.

Until next time...

-Wil

Boston Globe had an article the other day that I thought was very interesting, and it's away from the politics that I seem to have been focused upon for the last week or so. This article is about Amish peoples moving into the Unity, Maine area. It's an agricultural area and many there wanted to keep it that way, and so they have.

Several Amish families have moved into the area, and this is the towns reactions and the reactions of the Amish who moved in. I think many of you may enjoy reading it. I know I did.

By Sarah Schweitzer, Globe Staff | November 29, 2009

UNITY, Maine - The land was gorgeous. Pastures bounded by forests
and overlooked by the distant Dixmont hills. And that was the problem.

As dairy farms in Unity have struggled and died in recent years,
town leaders worried the setting would draw developers more interested
in erecting neo-Colonials and paving roads than preserving the town’s
agricultural heritage. They recruited organic farmers who bought small
plots. But vast swaths remained.

Then a little more than a year ago men in banded straw hats and
denim suits arrived and started buying big parcels. They built sturdy
houses on the hillsides above fields where they planted strawberries
and butternut squash, and loosed goats and cows to graze. They started
small businesses on their land, turning out metal siding, wind
turbines, and furniture, and sold vegetables and baked goods.

“The Amish were the solution that we were looking for - that we
could never have dreamed up,’’ said Doug Fox, a neighbor of the
Hochstetlers, one of Unity’s eight Amish families.

In a rugged stretch of Maine, where self-reliance and iconoclasm
have been long honored, Amish are settling and finding eager neighbors.
Amish first made homes in Smyrna and Easton in Aroostook County and
most recently in Unity and neighboring Thorndike, in the state’s
center, transforming landscapes into scenes that could be postcards
from Lancaster, Pa. - byways dotted with pickups giving wide berth to
horse-drawn buggies carrying women in bonnets and men with beards.
Today, about 200 Amish live in Maine, according to their leaders.

They have come from Michigan and Canada, Tennessee and Kentucky, and
other offshoots of original Amish settlements in Pennsylvania. Some are
fleeing encroaching suburbs and neck-craning tourists, and seeking
open-minded communities that will allow them to practice their brand of
ultra-simple living. Some are following a directive to spread the word
of their lifestyle and Christian beliefs by starting communities in
places far from other Amish settlements.

With their hand-stitched shirts and chaste frocks, the Amish still
command double-takes in Maine as they bike to school and carpool to Wal-Mart.
But they quickly have become integral parts of their communities even
as they observe boundaries to avoid technologies that they shun, such
as electricity from the grid. Among some Mainers, there is a small but
not insignificant amount of Amish envy.

“I stand here all day and watch them,’’ said Josh Miville, manager
of Chase Toys in Unity, a shop that sells all-terrain vehicles and sits
across from an Amish farm and the community’s one-room schoolhouse.
“And I’ll tell you, they’ve got something figured out that we don’t.
It’s the simple life. No power bills, no cellphones, no worries.’’

In Unity, population 1,900, the Amish have found a particularly
happy coincidence of interests. The town is home to Unity College, an
environmental school that teaches sustainable living practices and
lends an earthy quality to the culture. That a group of people with
such small carbon footprints - erecting wind turbines to charge battery
packs used for powering tools and lanterns, keeping food cold in summer
in an insulated basement room lined with three wagonloads of ice chunks
from a pond - would land here, strikes many as a perfect alignment.

“You should see how hard they work,’’ said Ron Rudolph, a town
selectman and co-owner of an organic vineyard. “I couldn’t believe the
houses they put up - in days. And the best part of it is, they don’t
drive cars that smoke up the area.’’

Amish residents say the appreciation is mutual.

“I like the laid-back lifestyle,’’ said Andrew Stoll, a 35-year-old
father of five who moved to Unity from Michigan and runs a metal
roofing business out of his barn. His mother and three brothers also
now make their homes here. “People are very neighborly.’’

To be sure, when the Amish first arrived in town last year, they
were curiosities, their culture a whispered topic that sent some people
scurrying to laptop computers to figure out just what their dress and
German-accented English were all about. Residents weren’t sure whether
to wave when they saw Amish bicycling along the road, which was now
sometimes speckled with manure from horses pulling buggies. Some leery
residents asked the town clerk whether they paid property taxes. She
assured them they did.

But in short order, they became the cool kids that everyone wanted
to know. Recently, neighbors flocked to a pig roast the Hochstetlers
hosted. Meanwhile, the Unity Union Church men’s fellowship lobbied for
weeks to have the leading Amish men attend their meeting and explain
the Amish lifestyle. On any given day, the Amish have their pick of
residents’ standing offers to drive them to stores in nearby
Waterville. (The Amish in Unity do not own or drive cars but will
accept rides.)

“There’s a friendly competition to see who knows the most about the
Amish,’’ said Fox, a professor of landscape horticulture at Unity
College.

The Amish maintain some divisions. They send their children to their
own school and do not permit their children to visit the homes of
non-Amish. They are not easily reached because they don’t have phones
in their houses, though some have put phones in sheds. Amish discourage
phones in homes to preserve family time. They do not read local
newspapers or vote in elections. And they often defer to their first
language, Pennsylvania Dutch, a German dialect.

But Amish have increasingly become a part of town life. Crosstrax, a
funky deli that sells milk and cheeses from local farms, now also
offers baskets of Amish-grown vegetables - last week, spaghetti squash
from Amish in Thorndike. Amish businessmen regularly show up at Chase
Toys, where Miville receives faxes on their behalf. And come
Wednesdays, the store is flooded with calls from residents wanting to
know whether Abner Stoll is selling his glazed doughnuts across the way
that week.

“The Amish don’t so much influence the town as complement the town,’’ said Naomi Caywood, a clerk at Crosstrax.

The Amish residents say they had little idea of Unity’s makeup when
they settled here. They were looking for land and heard that Unity had
ample stock at reasonable prices. (One family bought a 200-acre parcel
for $350,000 and another a 100-acre parcel for $235,000, with money
principally earned from small businesses.) They say the land needs work
to revive its haying potential, but they have been pleasantly surprised
by the town’s embrace of their efforts.

“They want the land to be preserved,’’ said Ervin Hochstetler, 45.
He moved his wife, Esther, also 45, and 11 children - now 12 children,
ages 21 to 7 months - to Unity from Smyrna, and is planning to build
wind turbines that produce compressed air for pneumatic tools.

The Hochstetler home is a study in efficiency, with solar panels on
the roof and two small wind turbines in the field. As they tucked into
a meal of deer meat and potatoes for lunch on a recent day, their
eldest daughter retrieved yogurt from the porch, where food is stored

Fox News has been reporting this week that the Climate Research Unit(CRU) has been fudging reports and deleting e-mails to hide what they have been doing.

Wow... What the hell? You mean to tell me that, all the bullshit put forth by the CRU - and other environmentalist whackjobs - was just that?

Here is the article from Fox News(articles are italicized):

Hackers broke into the servers at a prominent British climate
research center and leaked years worth of e-mail messages onto the Web,
including one with a reference to a plan to "hide the decline" in
temperatures.

The Internet is abuzz about the leaked data from the University of East Anglia's Climate Research Unit (commonly called Hadley CRU), which has acknowledged the theft of 61MB of confidential data.

Climate change skeptics describe the leaked data as a "smoking gun,"
evidence of collusion among climatologists and manipulation of data to
support the widely held view that climate change is caused by the
actions of mankind. The authors of some of the e-mails, however, accuse
the skeptics of taking the messages out of context, adding that the
evidence still clearly shows a warming trend.

The files were reportedly released on a Russian file-serve by an anonymous poster calling himself "FOIA."

In an exclusive interview in Investigate magazine's TGIF Edition, Phil Jones, the head of the Hadley CRU, confirmed that the leaked data is real.

"It was a hacker. We were aware of this about three or four days
ago," he told the magazine, noting that the center has yet to contact
the police about the data breach.

TGIF Edition asked Jones about the controversial "hide the
decline" comment from an e-mail he wrote in 1999: "I've just completed
Mike's Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the
last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd [sic] from 1961 for Keith's to
hide the decline."

He told the magazine that there was no intention to mislead, but he had "no idea" what he meant by those words.

"That was an e-mail from ten years ago. Can you remember the exact context of what you wrote ten years ago?" he said.

"Mike" refers to Jones' colleague Michael Mann, who told the New
York Times that the "trick" was simply a way of solving a data problem.
In this case, the warming trend of the last century was detected in
tree-ring samples only until 1960, but it continued in thermometer
readings.

Jones' word choice was poor, Mann told the Times, but the calculations were "not something secret."

The Telegraph has posted some of the more scathing excerpts from these emails,
which the newspaper suggests points to manipulation of evidence and
private doubts about the reality of global warming, though the much of
the scientific language in the e-mails is esoteric and hard to
interpret.

Others suggest the comments are simply "scientists talking about
science." In an interview with Wired, Kevin Trenberth, head of the
Climate Analysis Section at the National Center for Atmospheric
Research, points out that "if you read all of these e-mails, you will
be surprised at the integrity of these scientists."

Still, one notable e-mail from the hacked files clearly describes
how to squeeze dissenting scientists from the peer review process:

"I think we have to stop considering Climate Research as a
legitimate peer-reviewed journal. Perhaps we should encourage our
colleagues in the climate research community to no longer submit to, or
cite papers in, this journal. We would also need to consider what we
tell or request of our more reasonable colleagues who currently sit on
the editorial board…What do others think?"

But then, I find this article by The Guardian in the United Kingdom, stating that the University of East Aglia would be conducting an investigation on the e-mails and the CRU. Here is the article:

The University of East Anglia
is to launch a review into the theft and online publication of hundreds
of emails sent by scientists in its climate research unit.

Selected and unverified extracts from the emails have been used by climate change
deniers to claim that the scientists colluded to manipulate climate
data, causing a storm on deniers' blogs. The charge is rejected as
"despicable" by those involved and as groundless by leading scientific
bodies.

With less than two weeks before the crucial UN climate
change summit in Copenhagen, climate scientists and campaigners are
assessing the damage the incident has caused to the public
understanding of global warming. Opinion was split last night over how
to deal with the fallout.

Bob Ward, director of policy and
communications at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change at
the London School of Economics, called for an investigation.

"Once
appropriate action has been taken over the hacking, there has to be
some process to assess the substance of the email messages as well," he
said.

"The selective disclosure and dissemination of the messages
has created the impression of impropriety, and the only way of clearing
the air now would be through a rigorous investigation. "

However, others said an investigation would be a mistake, particularly as some climate sceptics were also calling for one.

Andy
Atkins, Friends of the Earth's executive director, said: "Calls for an
inquiry look suspiciously like an attempt to cast doubt on the science
of climate change ahead of crucial UN negotiations.

"The
overwhelming majority of climate scientists believe that climate change
is happening, that it is man-made, and that it poses a major threat to
people across the planet. We can't afford to be distracted from the
need for urgent action."

George Marshall, founder of the Climate
Outreach and Information Network, said: "The UEA response has been
frankly pathetic. One can only imagine that the UEA's communications
team is totally out of its depth. A less charitable conclusion is that
they are defending the interests of UEA and are not concerned about –
or have not understood – the damage to climate science."

The Met
Office, which jointly produces global temperature data with the climate
research unit, said there was no need for an inquiry. "If you look at
the emails, there isn't any evidence that the data was falsified and
there's no evidence that climate change is a hoax," a spokesman said.

"It's
a shame that some of the sceptics have had to take this rather shallow
attempt to discredit robust science undertaken by some of the world's
most respected scientists. It's no surprise, with the Copenhagen talks
just days away, that this has happened now."

Michael Mann,
director of the earth system science centre at the University of
Pennsylvania, and a long-term target of sceptics, agreed the timing was
suspicious.

"What appears to have happened is that going into
this monumental climate summit in a couple of weeks the other side,
which does not favour taking action to combat climate change, resorted
to an illegal smear campaign," he said.

"They are going through
them and cherry-picking them for any word they can find that is cited
out of context and can appear incriminating. I think it's despicable."

He
told the Guardian the emails – though embarrassing – did not undermine
the body of science. "This doesn't make any difference at all in degree
of consensus on climate change," Mann said. "I hope it boomerangs back
on the criminals."

A joint statement from the Met Office, Royal
Society and the Natural Environment Research Council said: "The
scientific evidence which underpins calls for action at Copenhagen is
very strong.

"Without co-ordinated international action on
greenhouse gas emissions, the impacts on climate and civilisation could
be severe."

So there it is. Two different articles. One, full out claiming(basically) that Climate Change is a hoax by CRU and their ilk. The second, more cautious - and with a bit of disbelief - and willing to wait until a review is in before condemning it. So far, Fox News is the only news organization that has reported about the e-mail leak. Which is a bit worriesome for me. They are news organizations, it's their job to report things like this, even if it goes against their political affiliations.

Anywho, I thought others would like to read this as well, so I posted it for you. I want your take on this. Is it a bunch of B.S.? Or, is there some truth to either article? Are you on the fence on this? Have at it!

Until next time...

-Wil

And had to share with folks. Some won't think it's funny, of course, but others will. I remember quite a few jokes I read/heard/watched about Bush and almost busted a gut laughing at them. So here's the new joke in Maxim Magazine:

Barack Obama visits a classroom and asks the kids if they have questions. A little girl raises her hand and says, "A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat grass. But a deer poops pellets, cows make patties, and horses crap piles in dried grass. Why is that?"

Obama thinks about it and finally admits, "I have no idea." The little girl replies, "OK, second question: Do you really feel qualified to run America when you don't know shit?"

I laughed my ass off at that. It's a stupid joke, I'll admit, but still funny. Hope you all got a kick out of it as well.

Oh, and a special thanks to the Maxim Magazine editors for putting that in the new issue. Too damned funny.

Stay cool. Stay safe. And always remember to keep a sense of humor about things. It's the one thing that can keep us sane in an insane world, especially during times like these.

Until next time...

-Wil

RealClearPolitics posted an article on Thursday by a Major Shawn Keller who is serving at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. I will allow Major Keller to speak for himself, but his opinion on the matter is something I agree with. The article follows:

As an officer in the United States Army, I'm angry for so many
reasons over what happened at Ft. Hood. I'm angry that twelve of my
fellow soldiers and a contractor were murdered. I'm angry that over
thirty people have suffered life altering injuries from which they will
never fully recover. I'm angry that the lives of so many families have
been forever ruined. I'm angry that this happened on an Army post on
American soil where soldiers should be safe. And I'm angry that the
murderer was a terrorist who masqueraded as an Army officer for half a
dozen years.

But as angry as I am at what happened, I'm even angrier that it was
allowed to happen. Apparently, there was no shortage of warning signs
that Hasan identified more with Islamic Jihadists than he did with the
US Army. From speeches, writings, conversations, affiliations and
postings on Jihadist websites, there were more than enough dots to
connect that should have exposed Hasan as someone inclined to attack
innocent people in the furtherance of a political, religious and
ideological agenda. There were more than enough red flags raised that,
at a minimum, should have gotten Hasan kicked out of the Army.

But just like September 11, those agencies and individuals charged with
keeping America and Americans safe failed to connect the dots that
would have saved lives. Jihadist rhetoric espoused by Hasan was
categorically dismissed out of submissiveness to the concepts of
tolerance and diversity. The Army as an institution has been neutered
by decades of political correctness and the leaders in Hasan's
chain-of-command failed to act accordingly out of fear of being labeled
anti-Muslim and receiving a negative evaluation report. The
counter-terrorism agencies knew Hasan was communicating with Al-Qaeda
and dismissed it as academic research instead of delving deeper into
the probability that a terrorist had infiltrated the ranks.

Even four hours after Hasan stood on a desk yelling Allahu Akbar!
and opened fire, the FBI stated that they were not investigating the
attack as an act of terrorism even as there were still reports of other
gunmen on the loose. Meanwhile, the Army continues to dismiss it as a
"tragedy" and an "isolated incident by a lone gunman" while the media
has invented the psychological condition of post-traumatic stress
disorder by proxy. There is more concern for promoting the appropriate
information operation campaign and maintaining the illusion of safety
than there is for actually exposing the weaknesses and faults in the
system that allowed this to happen. We're even being told that damage
to the Army's efforts at diversity would be a greater tragedy than the
murder of the twelve soldiers -- how ironic the week of Veterans' Day.

This has nothing to do with being anti-Islamic. After numerous tours
to Iraq and working with countless cultural advisors on Ft. Bragg, I
know dozens of Muslims who I respect and admire greatly. This has
everything to do with force protection and security being trumped by
the concepts of political correctness and diversity. This has
everything to do with a hypocritical system and culture that breeds
timidity and dismissiveness in the interest of career advancement. If I
preached a white-supremacist ideology or described Timothy McVeigh as a
hero to the cause of freedom and liberty, how long do you think I would
still be in the military drawing a salary, receiving educational
benefits and getting promoted like Hasan did?

Hasan's radical ideology grew to the point that he committed mass
murder because too many leaders were too afraid to lead out of fear of
harming their career or the image of the Army. If those leaders don't
have the intestinal fortitude, moral conviction or personal courage to
stand up, speak up and protect soldiers, then retire, resign or get out
of the way and let somebody else do it for you.

There you have it. The words as spoken by one angry Army officer. No doubt there are many of them - as well as enlisted personnel - who feel the same.

It seems to me that far too many in America today are worried about being Politically Correct rather than just being Correct and doing the right thing. I hope that something good comes out of this attack. Like maybe watching for the signs, and doing something about it, even if it's just sending the person to a psychiatrist for therapy.

According to the news, the Army will be conducting a Courts Martial against Major Hasan. One of the penalties that can be found in such an action is the death penalty. But in order for such an order to be confirmed, President Obama will have to sign off on it. Anyone want to take bets on whether or not President Obama will actually do the right thing? However, the Courts Martial hasn't yet been convened, so we don't know if that court will sentence him to death,or not. It could be hard labor at Leavenworth.

I'm hoping for the death penalty, to be perfectly honest. This guy is already a waste of space, America doesn't need him to be a waste of money and time in our federal prisons.

And yes, I am aware that some of you may think I want him dead simply because he's a Muslim, or of non-white descent. That would be utter bullshit, as I don't give a damn what someone's religion is, nor what color their skin color is. I want the guy to die for a terrorist attack on one of our bases in which he killed 12 people and wounded 30 more. I want this guy to die for what amounts to treason - which is punishable by death.

I know it may sound heartless and cruel to many of you, but what that man did was also heartless and cruel, and he deserves the same fate as those 12 soldiers.

Until next time...

-Wil
